This update does not include these late matches from today:

  • Benjamin Becker vs. Marat Safin (26)
  • Lukas Dlouhy vs. Teimuraz Gabashvili

Overall standings

It didn't take long for the first major upset to rock the tournament, as Fish took out fourth-seeded Ljubicic. That, combined with a few minor surprises, leaves Manuel Halkias and Jasper van der Zwan as the only ones left with unblemished scores. Note that both Manuel and Jasper picked Fish.

Men's draw

The loss of Ljubicic was the big story here. Overall leaders Manuel Halkias and Jasper van der Zwan are joined at the top of the men's table by fellow Fish-pickers Jason Juzwiak and Aaron Heinsman.

As for the rest of us, we can only curse the name of the Heartbreaker of the Day:

Mardy Fish

A dangerous first-round opponent turned deadly for the fourth seed, as Ljubicic was dismissed on opening day by the big-serving Fish. Another grand slam opponent for the Croatian, and an impressive step in Fish's comeback from wrist surgery.

In all, 5 contestants made the wise move of picking Fish!

Tomorrow's key first-rounder:

James Blake (USA)[5] vs. Carlos Moya (ESP):
A replay of the Sydney final of last Saturday, won 6-3 5-7 6-1 by Blake. 4 contestants picked Moya to gain revenge and go on to reach the fourth round.

Women's draw

There were no major upsets and most of us still have perfect scores.

Tomorrow's key first-rounder:

Vania King (USA) vs. Ana Ivanovic (SRB)[13]:
Ivanovic might have to be wary of King, who may never be a Billie Jean but did win the Bangkok title last fall at age 17. Vania was selected by 2 contestants.
