2007 Aussie Open Contest: Update 3
Wednesday, January 17

Note: this is a correction of an earlier update 3 I had posted with incorrect women's scores. I had mistakenly registered Li as losing her second round match, which she in fact won. Apologies for the error and thanks to those who called it to my attention. These scores are correct, I think!

This update does not include these late matches:

  • Gael Monfils vs. Marcos Baghdatis (11)
  • Tommy Robredo (7) vs. Jurgen Melzer
  • Overall Standings

  • Overall standings

Manuel Halkias has finally lost his perfect score and falls into a first place tie with Ed Zafian! The first blemishes on Manuel's record came courtesy of Ferrero and Schiavone. A number of players are massed close to the lead.

    Men's draw

Manuel Halkias also loses his sole leadership here, thanks to that Ferrero pick, and now shares top spot with Ed Zafian and Dan Wachs. Both Ed and Dan did well to stick with the high seed Djokovic in Ferrero's bracket. But it's still early days!

    Tomorrow's key second-rounder:

Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) vs. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)[10]:
Del Potro is tipped by many as the next star out of Argentina, and is ranked #73 at the tender age of 18. He was picked 4 times in the Gonzelez/Hewitt bracket. Fernando defeated Del Potro twice last year.

    Women's draw

Our women's scores got their first shakeup! Only four perfect scores remain: Craig Willeford, Javier Camacho, Joerenes and Diego. Much of the damage was done by the 14th seed Schiavone, ousted by the Heartbreaker of the Day:

    Lucie Safarova

Our four co-leaders were among the 9 contestants who picked Safarova, the 19-year-old out of the Czech Republic who dominated Schiavone to reach the third round of a major for the first time. Lucie's chances of reaching the second week appear good, since both seeds (Schiavone and Sugiyama) were eliminated from that bracket and Safarova will face Yakimova for a berth in the round of sixteen.

    Tomorrow's key second-rounder:

Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) vs. Ana Ivanovic (SRB)[13]:
Radwanska, the former junior #1, memorably reached the Wimbledon round of sixteen last year, the year after winning the Wimbledon juniors. Now ranked #59, the Polish teen was seen a a viable option in Schnyder's bracket by 2 contestants.
